Prerequisites

  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Good level of fitness and swimming ability.
  • Have completed the Canyon Leader Course and Advanced Rigging (or similar) 

UKCA recommends the student has consolidated skills from the canyon leader and advanced rigging workshop and has a high level of canyoning experience and technical knowledge.

Day 1 - Theory, Ethics and Bolting

Part 1A - Bolting theory and ethics - classroom

  • Bolting history
  • Bolting ethics 
  • Environmental standards and concerns
  • Moral and personal responsibility
  • Rigging techniques - IRT and Alpine technique
  • Static System Safety Factor (SSSF)
  • Canyon rigging hierarchy 
  • Bolting equipment and considerations
  • Bolting safety

Part 1B - Placing Bolts - cliff, boulder or canyon

  • Mechanical expansion bolts
  • Glue-in (resin bolts)
  • Removable bolts
  • Spit bolts (hand drill)
  • Teamwork for expedition bolting

 

Day 2 - Canyon Descent Clinic

Part 2A - Canyon Bolting - canyon rated V2+

  • Team exploration descent
  • Emergency bolting (escape)

This section of the workshop will give the student the opportunity to practice placing anchors as a team in a new canyon or re-equipping a current open canyon. The student will be able to consolidate their skills and participate as a team descending a canyon in an exploratory style.
