Profile

On completion of the course, the student will have the skills and knowledge to initiate and manage direct and indirect rescues on a canyoning excursion. They will understand the rescue process and the risk involved with ‘on rope’ rescue. The student will learn advanced rope progression techniques.

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Good level of fitness and swimming ability.
  • Have completed the Canyon Leader Course (or similar) 

UKCA recommends the student has consolidated skills from the canyon leader and has a good level of canyoning experience.

Day 1 - Rope Progression and Rescue Theory

Part 1A - Rescue Theory

  • Rigging for rescue and rescue contingencies 
  • Rescue hierarchy 
  • Rescue principles
  • Anchor considerations
  • Common rescue scenarios and considerations
  • Mechanical Advantage

Part 1B - Horizontal Rope Progression

The student will learn how to move safely on:

  • Full void traverse lines with intermediate points

Part 1C - Vertical Rope Progression 

  • Passing knots on descent
  • Passing knots on ascent
  • Descend using improvised descenders
  • Ascend using improvised device
  • Ascend on double rope
  • Pass a knot on a double rope
  • Ascend a guided abseil
  • Passing a Rebelay 

 

Day 2 - Theory and Rope Rescue

Part 2A - Indirect Rescue

  • Feedback - Indirect Rescue
  • Feedback - 3:1 Simple Haul
  • Indirect - 2:1 Haul (Lift) to release a jammed descender
  • Indirect - Indirect rope cutting using counterbalance
  • Indirect - Counterbalance haul rescue using PCP

Part 2B - On Rope Rescue

  • Assisted abseil techniques
  • Direct - Assistance rescue
  • Direct - Counterbalance rescue (from above)
  • Direct - Counterbalance rescue (from below)
  • Direct - 2:1 strop rescue using PCP

Part 3B - Traverse Line and Guided Rappel Rescue

  • Direct - Rescue on traverse line
