On completion of the course, the student will have the skills to move very confidently in a swiftwater canyoning environment on a canyoning descent. They will have the knowledge to read and understand more complex swiftwater movements and make competent decisions regarding progression in swiftwater. They will have the skills to manage a team rescue in a highly aquatic canyon.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Very good level of fitness and swimming ability.
  • Have completed the Canyon Leader Course (or similar)
  • Have completed the swift water canyoning workshop (or similar) 

UKCA recommends the student has consolidated skills from the Swift water canyoning workshop and Canyon Leader Course and has a high level of canyoning experience.

Syllabus 

 

Day 1 - Advanced Swift Water Progression and Night Exercise

Part 1A - Advanced Swift Water Progression - Canyon rated A4+ or River grade 3

  • Trap pools, undercuts and siphons
  • Advanced Guided Abseils
  • Floating Anchors
  • Tethered rope setting
  • Abseiling in the flow

Part 1B - Swift Water Night Exercise 

The night exercise is designed to give the student the opportunity to experience canyoning in the dark and practice swift water progression skills on a canyoning descent under the guidance of a trainer. The night exercise will be carried out on a section of canyon descent in low light or night time. 

 

Day 2 - Advanced Swift Water Rescue

Part 2A - Swift Water Rescue - Canyon rated A4 or River grade 3

  • Personal rope cutting in swift water
  • V - lower
  • Foot entrapment rescue 
  • Ascend a guideline with a casualty

Part 2B - Swift Water Incident Management 

This section of the workshop will give the student the opportunity to practice managing a swift water incident. The student will be able to consolidate their skills and participate in a more complex team swift water rescue scenario.
