They will have the knowledge to read and understand swiftwater movements and make competent decisions regarding progression in swiftwater. They will have the skills to initiate a rescue in a swift water canyon.

  • Good level of fitness and swimming ability.
  • Have completed the Canyon Leader Course (or similar) 

UKCA recommends the student has consolidated skills from the canyon leader and has a good level of canyoning experience.

Day 1 - Theory and Swift Water Progression

Part 1A - Theory and Equipment 

  • Swift water canyon hydrology
  • Flooding and flash flooding
  • Swift water (and rescue) principles
  • PPE and equipment

Part 1B - Swift Water Progression - Canyon rated A3 or River grade 2 max 

  • Defensive swimming.
  • Aggressive swimming.
  • Ferry swimming
  • Swift water entry techniques
  • River Crossing advanced techniques.
  • Set up and use a tension diagonal.
  • Jumping and Sliding

 

Day 2 - Swift Water Progression and Rescue

Part 2A - Swift Water Progression - Canyon rated A3+ or River grade 2+

  • Swimming and management of equipment and bags
  • Duck diving and apnea

Part 2B - Swift Water Rescue Canyon rated A3+ or River grade 2+

  • Rescue principles - Shout Reach Throw Go
  • Tethered rescue 
  • Swimming contact rescues
  • Swift-water lock off

Part 2C - Rescue Scenarios Canyon rated A3+ or River grade 2+

  • Moving a team across swift water
  • Flash flood scenarios
  • Casualty management in swift water
