The UKCA Canyon Instructor is the highest professional award, for highly experienced L2 guides who wish to lead and teach in commercial canyons above V3.A4.ii and deliver the Introduction to Canyoning programme. Graduates demonstrate expert anticipatory decision-making, mastery of clean, efficient rigging, advanced rescue skills, course delivery and mentoring ability. They act as role models and technical advisors within the UKCA framework. Assessment and training run over four days under the UKCA Senior Training Team. Day 1 covers UKCA systems, teaching standards and an entry rope-progression itinerary test. Day 2 focuses on pitch management, advanced rescue (counterbalance, rope-cut and direct assistance), scenario-based incident management and course preparation. Days 3–4 are teaching-led: candidates deliver the two-day Introduction to Canyoning course, are observed on facilitation and technique mastery, and complete the final counterbalance rescue test. Timed performance standards apply to entry and rescue tests; safety errors incur failure. Prerequisites: 21+, valid 2-day first aid, very high fitness/mental resilience and swimming ability, Canyon Guide Level 2 award, extensive logbook (minimum 80 canyoning days across 20+ canyons and substantial leadership experience), Professional Membership required. The UKCA Canyon Guide Level 2 assessment certifies experienced guides to lead commercial canyoning excursions up to V3 A4 ii. Successful graduates demonstrate advanced anticipatory decision-making, clean and efficient rigging, strong rope and swift-water competence, trip planning and the ability to lead as head guide. L2 holders may work alone with up to eight clients (extendable to 16 with another L2/L1 present) and assist instructors in more technical environments. Assessment is run by a UKCA Senior Trainer over two days. Day 1 evaluates technical competence in a moderate-to-challenging canyon (V3/A4-style features): geology, planning, equipment management, knotcraft, movement through A3–A4 features, advanced rope progression, water movement and bag management, releasable advanced rigging systems, abrasion mitigation, and rope-rescue procedures (counterbalance, 3:1 hauls, direct assistance and cutting rescues). Timed tests include a rope conversion (ascend/convert/descend past a knot within the time limit) and a direct rope-cutting rescue within specified limits. Day 2 assesses leadership, instruction and group management in a canyon up to V3 A4 ii: professional briefings, risk disclosure, use of a second guide, sequencing, effective client instruction (movement, jumps, rope work, swimming) and incident management, followed by personal feedback and next-step guidance toward instructor pathways. Prerequisites: 21+, valid 2-day first aid, high fitness and swimming. Logbook: extensive prior experience required. Direct entry to assessment is permitted where candidates can demonstrate equivalent prior experience/qualification.

This three-day UKCA Level 2 course prepares experienced Level 1 guides to operate professionally in canyons rated up to V3 A4 ii. Delivered by a UKCA Senior Trainer, the programme advances leadership, trip preparation, complex rigging, rope progression and swift-water competence so candidates can confidently lead commercial excursions in more demanding terrain. Candidates should already be competent L1 guides with consolidated canyon experience. Day 1 combines theory with advanced rope progression and swift-water movement: roles and responsibilities of an L2 guide, working with a second guide, psychological considerations, full-void traverse work, complex ascent/descent techniques (knot passing, improvised devices, double-rope methods) and guided abseil practice. Day 2 is a deep dive into anchors and rigging: fall-factor theory, single/twin/double systems, rope optimisation, natural and human anchors, retrievable/releasable systems, fixed and intermediate traverse lines, multi-pitch rigging and guided rappel methods. Day 3 focuses on rope and swift-water indirect and direct rescues including: haul systems: counterbalance and 3:1 hauls, rope-cut and assistance rescues, plus advanced river progression, defensive/active swimming, tension diagonals and swift-water contact rescue techniques.  Prerequisites: 21+, high fitness and swimming, L1 assessment complete and professional membership required. Direct entry to training is permitted where candidates can demonstrate equivalent prior experience/qualification.

The Canyon Guide Level 1 assessment verifies candidates can safely lead novice canyoneers in commercial canyons up to V2.A3.ii. Successful graduates demonstrate strong anticipatory decision-making, efficient rigging and anchor solutions, competent planning and preparation of introductory canyon experiences, and the ability to teach basic canyoning skills. On successful completion the candidate holds Professional Qualification and may work alone with up to eight participants (extendable to 16 with a second L1 present) and assist higher-level guides in more demanding canyons. Assessment runs over two days under a UKCA Senior Trainer. Day 1 tests technical competence in a moderate-risk canyon (V3A3ii-style features) including navigation, hydrology, PPE, knotcraft, movement (jumps, slides, downclimbs), movement on rope, water skills, rigging for rescue, abrasion management and timed rope-rescue/conversion tests. Day 2 assesses leadership, instruction, group and incident management in a canyon up to V2A3ii: briefing, professionalism, team control, teaching skills and real-group delivery, followed by feedback and certification. Prerequisites: 18+, valid 2-day first-aid, good fitness and swimming, a logbook (min. 20 canyons incl. 5 different V3A3ii+; 10 days co-assisting/co-leading), and professional membership. Direct entry to assessment is permitted where candidates can demonstrate equivalent prior experience/qualification.

This three-day UKCA Canyon Guide Level 1 course prepares candidates to work as canyoning guides in canyons rated V2 A3 ii or below and readies them for the formal L1 assessment. Delivered by a UKCA Senior Trainer, the programme covers trip preparation, leadership, group management, rigging, pitch management and rescue. Candidates should arrive with solid canyoning skills; all sessions combine theory, practical stations and scenario-based workshops to build professional competence. Prerequisites: age 18+, a minimum two-day first-aid certificate, good fitness and swimming ability, completion of Canyon Leader Certification (or equivalent), and UKCA Professional Membership. The training emphasises UKCA standards, role responsibility, risk assessment, participant psychology and teaching methods alongside efficient rigging and releasable systems suited to canyon environments. Practical days focus on pitch management, belaying, assisted abseiling, lowering and comprehensive rescue techniques (self, indirect, direct and cut-and-lower methods). White-water swim rescue, casualty handling and incident management are practised, then candidates co-deliver a supervised mock trip in a V2,A3,ii canyon. The course finishes with structured feedback, CPD guidance and clear steps toward assessment readiness.
