Madeira is a beautiful Portuguese island off the coast of Africa. It’s known for its namesake wine and warm, subtropical climate. The main island of Madeira is volcanic, green and rugged, with high cliffs; with this mountainous environment it has become a mecca for canyoning with over 80 equipped canyons, and more still to discover. On this international trip we will take you to some of the most iconic canyons Madeira has to offer. We will be based 40mins drive from Funchal on the north side of the island in Sao Vicente, a small coastal village surrounded by many canyons with great access. After a great day in the canyons we will spend the evenings eating great food and relaxing with a glass of wine or Poncha.
This canyoning trip requires experience in intermediate to advanced canyons. Many of the canyons you will explore are a full day experiences, some begin with a stunning hikes along flat irrigation systems others are steep climbs up mountain footpaths. From here under the instruction and Guidance of two ICO pro instructors you will descent the canyons. The canyons are high vertical, so the waterfalls are BIG were talking 80, 90, 100m+, with this, you need to use specific rope techniques to access the bolts and abseil stations. The canyons in Madeira tend to be less aquatic, with lots of rappels and not so many jumps.
On your trip to Maderia with The Canyoning Company you will be accompanied by a UK host ICOpro Instructor, either Ben Case, George Yates or both. But for the local canyon knowledge and ultimate experience we will be accompanied by a local canyon guide.
For the Madeira canyoning trip we advise you have a good level of fitness. Most of the hike ins are on flat irrigation systems making it nice and easy but some of the canyons require steep 1 – 2 hour hikes. That said you don’t need to be an athlete!! On the hike ins we take lots of breaks and soak up the scenery. If you have any concerns or questions just contact us.
Do I need to have any experience Canyoning?
